FUNGAL FIND OF THE MOMENT!

Redspored Dapperling - Northern Moor, 30/08/09, Debs Wallace

This pretty little mushroom was found by Debs Wallace in her garden in Northern Moor growing in a plant pot. It just goes to show that even new species for Greater Manchester can be found in the most unlikely of places. This species is said to be found on burnt ground and the rich soil flowerbeds or compost heaps, which fits perfectly with where Debs found hers. With Debs also recording 19 Collared Earthstars in her garden, it makes you think how many species occur in gardens that are going un-recorded.

OTHER NOTABLE FINDS RECENTLY

OLIVE EARTHTONGUE - Rochdale Cemetery (07/10/09), 1st GM record.

WATERY MILKCAP - Ashworth Wood (26/08/09), 1st record for Rochdale

The world of Mushrooms and fungi is fascinating, filled with myths, legends, folklore and magic. This website will hopefully give you an idea of the truths and the myths, and inspire you to go fungi hunting within Greater Manchester.

Welcome to ‘Manchester Mushrooms’, founded in 2009. The aim of the group is to inform local people of the amazing species that occur with in Greater Manchester as well as to record the many species that occur here. We hold events where people can come along and have a taster of how to identify species and visit some of the best sites in the area.

By joining the MMFG you will gain access to the database of records, both present and historical. Sightings from members and the group can also be accessed so you can see what the latest finds are in the county.

The MMFG group also helps with supplying data to various groups, including local councils so they are aware of the species which occur in their area. In 2009 the group brought the importance of a local cemetery in Rochdale to the attention of the council who aim to manage the site more sympathetically towards fungi.
